Michael Hits $423.9M Worldwide, Becomes No. 2 Music Biopic Ever as Sequel Talks Begin

The global box office continues to crown Michael as one of 2026’s biggest cinema events. The Michael Jackson biopic has now earned an impressive $423.9 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing music biopic in North American history and one of the year’s strongest Hollywood performers.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film has captured massive audience attention across domestic and international markets. As momentum builds, industry analysts now believe the movie could finish its theatrical run between $800 million and $1 billion globally.

Domestically, Michael has grossed $183.8 million, pushing past Elvis, which earned $151 million, and Straight Outta Compton, which made $161.2 million. Those gains place it firmly behind only Bohemian Rhapsody among music biopics in North America.

That achievement highlights the enduring global fascination with Michael Jackson and the strong appeal of a well-executed cinematic retelling of his life.

Internationally, the film added another $240.1 million, lifting total global earnings to $423.9 million. Consequently, Michael now ranks among the top five highest-grossing Hollywood releases of 2026 so far.

The second weekend numbers also turned heads across the industry. The film delivered $54 million in North America during weekend two, setting the biggest second weekend ever for a musical biopic. In addition, it became the second-largest second weekend for any biopic, beating Oppenheimer at $46.7 million and trailing only American Sniper at $64.6 million.

Those figures show more than opening-week curiosity. Instead, they confirm strong word-of-mouth, repeat viewership, and lasting audience demand.

Meanwhile, excitement is already growing around a sequel. Reports indicate Michael 2 is in early development and would focus on Jackson’s later years, including his global superstardom, controversies, and final chapter.

Jaafar Jackson is widely expected to return in the lead role after receiving praise for his transformation and performance. Studio insiders also see Fuqua’s continued involvement as essential to keeping the franchise on track.

If development moves smoothly, production could begin in late 2026 or 2027, with a possible theatrical release in 2029.

For now, however, all eyes remain on the original film’s unstoppable run. With strong overseas demand and domestic momentum still intact, Michael could soon become the first billion-dollar music biopic in history.
