Jay Z launched his long awaited London return on Friday, September 4, with a celebration that combined hip hop history, superstar power and a surprise reunion.
Performing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the rapper paused his sold out show to celebrate Beyoncé’s 45th birthday. Fireworks illuminated the stadium as the crowd joined Jay Z in singing “Happy Birthday” to his wife.
Beyoncé watched from a VIP suite alongside friends. She appeared on the stadium’s giant screens wearing a hoodie, blowing kisses and waving to the audience.
The moment added a personal dimension to a landmark night for Jay Z, who returned to London for his first UK headline performance in nearly 13 years.
His last solo London performance came in 2013 during the Magna Carta World Tour at The O2 Arena. He later returned to the city in 2018 for the On the Run II Tour with Beyoncé.
A celebration of three decades of Jay Z
The London shows form part of Jay Z’s wider celebration of the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
The run follows three major shows at New York’s Yankee Stadium last month, where Jay Z also celebrated 25 years of The Blueprint.
Friday’s performance moved across different stages of his career, bringing early records together with some of his biggest commercial and cultural hits.
The production also carried the scale of a major entertainment event, with several high profile guests joining the Brooklyn born rapper on stage.
DJ Khaled, Giggs and a surprise Fugees reunion
Sir Idris Elba opened the show with the spoken introduction featured on Jay Z’s 2007 album American Gangster before Jay Z took over the stage.
DJ Khaled later joined him for “God Did,” while UK rapper Giggs performed alongside Jay Z and delivered his own breakout track, “Talking the Hardest.”
The biggest surprise came later in the evening when Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean appeared together for an unexpected Fugees reunion.
The pair performed several classics associated with the influential hip hop group, including “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly” and “Fu Gee La.”
For fans, the appearance transformed the concert from a major Jay Z headline show into a celebration of hip hop history across generations.
London becomes a global celebrity gathering
The concert also attracted a long list of prominent names from entertainment, sport, fashion and business.
David Beckham, Cynthia Erivo, Michael B. Jordan, Rick Rubin, Thomas Tuchel, Dave, Olivia Dean, AJ Odudu and Kano were among the celebrities spotted at the stadium.
The strong turnout underlined Jay Z’s enduring influence beyond music and the commercial power of major live entertainment events built around globally recognised artists.
Jay Z continues the international tour
Jay Z is scheduled to perform a second night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, September 5.
The tour then moves to Paris, where he is scheduled to perform at Stade de France on September 10.
The run concludes with two shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in late October.
Additional dates were added as demand increased, extending a tour that has become one of the most significant live celebrations of Jay Z’s career.
For London, however, the opening night was about more than a concert. It brought together Beyoncé’s birthday, Jay Z’s return to the UK stage and an unexpected Fugees reunion in one of the biggest hip hop nights the city has seen in years.
