Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have unveiled a striking new portrait that celebrates both their personal journey and the power of artistic storytelling. The artwork, created by acclaimed Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, will welcome visitors to the Obama Presidential Center beginning this Juneteenth.
The unveiling marks another major international milestone for Akunyili Crosby, whose work continues to earn global recognition for its rich narratives, layered compositions, and cultural depth. Born in Nigeria and based in Los Angeles, the artist has built a reputation for blending personal memory, history, and identity into visually captivating works.
Sharing his excitement on X, Obama praised the artist’s vision and creativity.
“Barack and I were so honored to have Njideka Akunyili Crosby create our portrait for the Obama Presidential Center. Her artistic brilliance shines through and the way she infused such life and joy into the piece is truly extraordinary. We love it, and we think everyone who visits the Center will too.”

Obama later reflected on the significance of the project, describing the portrait as a visual representation of many chapters of his and Michelle Obama’s life together.
“It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.”
The unveiling also offered a glimpse into the creative process behind the portrait. During a conversation with the Obamas, the former president jokingly asked why the artist chose not to darken his graying hair in the final work.
“Oh my God, you’ve got everything in there. Now a real question. How come you didn’t dye my hair in the photo? You know they usually touch it up a little bit?” Obama joked.
Akunyili Crosby revealed that every detail resulted from extensive research and deliberate artistic choices. She explained that her team studied interviews, podcasts, videos, and archival material to understand the couple’s story before beginning the piece.

“I did the drawing first. We went through all the works, listened to interviews, podcasts, and videos. My whole studio became immersed in those memories. I wanted to make decisions that connected to those moments so that when you saw this portrait, it would feel familiar,” she explained.
The artist admitted that the commission challenged her creatively. Yet she described the experience as one of the most rewarding projects of her career because it pushed her beyond her comfort zone and encouraged artistic growth.
Michelle Obama also praised the final result and expressed admiration for Akunyili Crosby’s work. She revealed that she had long hoped to collaborate with the celebrated artist and was delighted that the opportunity finally became reality.
The portrait arrives at a time when African creatives continue to reshape global conversations around art, culture, and representation. Akunyili Crosby’s latest achievement reinforces the growing influence of African artists on the international stage while highlighting the extraordinary talent emerging from Nigeria’s creative ecosystem.

For visitors to the Obama Presidential Center, the portrait offers more than a visual tribute. It tells a story of partnership, history, resilience, and hope. For Nigerians and Africans worldwide, it serves as another powerful reminder that homegrown talent continues to leave a lasting mark on some of the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions.
As the Obama Presidential Center prepares to welcome guests this Juneteenth, one thing is certain: Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s masterpiece will stand as a symbol of artistic excellence, cultural pride, and the enduring impact of African creativity on the global stage.
