Burkina Faso has acquired the Chinese made Sky Dragon 30 air defense system as the West African country continues efforts to strengthen its military capabilities and expand its access to modern defense technology.
The system, manufactured by China North Industries Corporation, commonly known as Norinco, was identified after footage emerged showing Burkina Faso’s leader Ibrahim Traoré operating what appears to be the missile system.
The footage, reportedly filmed on September 1, also showed a mobile air surveillance radar with a rotating antenna and soldiers monitoring screens inside a command shelter.
According to defense publication Janes, the equipment was identified as the Sky Dragon 30 based on the configuration of the launcher, missile canisters and accompanying radar equipment, as reported by DefenseWeb.
The system is designed to provide mobile protection against airborne threats. Janes reports that the Sky Dragon 30 can engage targets at ranges of up to 30 kilometres and altitudes of up to 18 kilometres.
Its intended targets include aircraft, drones and cruise missiles, giving operators a system designed to detect, track and respond to different types of aerial threats.A mobile air defense capability
The Sky Dragon 30 combines missile launchers with radar and command systems. Its truck mounted launcher can carry six missiles and can be repositioned as operational requirements change.
Footage reviewed by Janes showed a launcher firing a missile from one of two visible canisters after radar equipment and a command shelter were shown.
Janes noted that the launcher appeared somewhat different from the configuration displayed by Norinco at Airshow China in 2022. The publication also reported that the missile displayed at the exhibition appeared to use the front section of the PL 10E air to air missile combined with a larger rocket motor.

In October 2025, Burkina Faso formally received a major shipment of Chinese manufactured military hardware. The equipment included VN22B 105 mm fire support vehicles, SR5 multiple rocket launchers, SM6 and WMA09 120 mm self propelled mortars and WZ551 based command vehicles, according to DefenseWeb.
Dongfeng EQ2050 armored vehicles were also seen during the handover.Earlier, in January 2024, Burkina Faso received at least eight CS/SM1 81 mm self propelled mortars mounted on Dongfeng EQ2050 tactical vehicles.
Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute also indicates that Burkina Faso received 16 VN22 armored vehicles, 10 WZ 551 armored personnel carriers and six Assaulter fire support vehicles from China in 2024.
For Burkina Faso, the expanding defense relationship with China comes as the country continues efforts to strengthen its armed forces and acquire equipment for modern military operations.
For China, the deliveries demonstrate the expanding role of its defense industry in African markets, particularly as countries seek to diversify their sources of military equipment and build domestic security capabilities.
The appearance of the Sky Dragon 30 therefore represents more than the arrival of a single weapons system. It is another visible development in Burkina Faso’s evolving military procurement relationship with China.
