Messi Makes History Again: Sixth World Cup Appearance Confirmed for 2026

Lionel Messi will step onto football’s biggest stage once again in 2026, as Argentina confirmed their 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup.

The decision places the global icon at the centre of history, as he prepares for a sixth appearance in the tournament.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni selected Messi to captain the reigning champions, extending a legacy that already includes a dramatic 2022 triumph over France.

That victory sealed Argentina’s third World Cup title and strengthened Messi’s status as one of the sport’s greatest players.

Messi, who will turn 39 during the tournament, continues to break records. He already holds the record for the most World Cup appearances with 26 matches, and he now stands alongside Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo as one of only two men to feature in six World Cup editions.

Argentina enters the tournament with a strong blend of experience and youth. Emiliano Martínez anchors the goalkeeping unit after his standout 2022 campaign.

Meanwhile, defensive leaders Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero return after overcoming injury concerns.

The squad also features Premier League influence, with Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool and Enzo Fernández of Chelsea playing central roles in midfield.

Both players bring intensity and control, which Argentina expects to rely on during the tournament.

In attack, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez return after lifting the trophy in Qatar. They join Messi in a frontline built on chemistry, speed, and finishing power.

Argentina will also depend on Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso to maintain midfield balance.

However, Scaloni made tough decisions. He left out Paulo Dybala due to injury struggles and excluded Emi Buendía despite strong recent form.

Young talents such as Franco Mastantuono and Gianluca Prestianni also missed out as the coach prioritized experience.

Argentina will open their campaign in Kansas City against Algeria before facing Austria and Jordan in the group stage.

The fixtures set up an early test of their title defence in North America.

Messi’s fitness remains under close watch. Inter Miami confirmed he suffered muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, though they ruled out injury concerns.

Argentina expects him to feature in upcoming friendlies, which could push him close to 200 international appearances.

The announcement reinforces Argentina’s ambition to defend their crown and extend their dominance on the world stage. With Messi leading the charge, expectations remain higher than ever.
