Cole Palmer has the chance to move ahead of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba in a significant Premier League milestone when Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend.
The England international enters the fixture just one goal away from reaching 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea. A goal against Arsenal would allow Palmer to reach the landmark in his 99th league appearance for the club.
That would put him ahead of Drogba, who needed 106 Premier League appearances to score his first 50 goals for Chelsea.
Palmer has already started the 2026/27 campaign in impressive fashion. He scored the winning goal against Fulham before producing another match winning strike against Brighton, underlining his importance to Chelsea’s attack.
The Arsenal fixture, however, presents a particularly difficult challenge.
Palmer chasing Drogba’s milestone
Drogba remains one of Chelsea’s most celebrated Premier League forwards, having established himself as a defining figure during the club’s most successful era.
Palmer’s scoring rate has been remarkable by comparison. Despite operating primarily as an attacking midfielder and creative forward rather than a traditional centre forward, he is approaching 50 Premier League goals at almost one goal every two matches.
Only Diego Costa and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink reached 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea in fewer appearances than Palmer is expected to need.
A goal at the Emirates would therefore carry more significance than simply adding another number to his season tally. It would place Palmer ahead of Drogba for the speed at which he reached the 50 goal mark.
The Emirates remains unfinished business
There is another storyline surrounding Palmer ahead of the match.
The Emirates is one of the few Premier League stadiums where he has yet to score as a Chelsea player.
Palmer has made only three Premier League appearances against Arsenal, with injuries and illness limiting his involvement in the fixture.
His only goal against the Gunners came from the penalty spot at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have also struggled in this fixture in recent seasons. The Blues have beaten Arsenal only once since 2019, adding further pressure to an already demanding away match.
For Palmer, the opportunity is clear. One goal could deliver a personal milestone while potentially helping Chelsea overcome one of their most difficult recent opponents.

New signing Morgan Rogers could also have a major role to play after establishing himself in the front three alongside Palmer and Joao Pedro.
Rogers arrives with an interesting connection to Arsenal after being linked with a move to the Gunners during the summer.
His performance at the Emirates will therefore be closely watched as Chelsea prepare for what could be their toughest test of the young Premier League season.
The combination of Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro has given Chelsea a dynamic attacking unit. Arsenal will provide a significantly stronger examination of that partnership than the opening victories over Fulham and Brighton.
For Palmer, though, the equation is simple.
